UKVIN
VIN IDENTITY GUIDE

Check more than one place.

VIN locations vary by manufacturer and model. This guide helps buyers locate and compare identity evidence without treating appearance alone as proof that a vehicle is genuine or fraudulent.

WHEN TO INVESTIGATE

Warning signs are prompts for further checks.

A repaired, restored or structurally modified vehicle can have legitimate reasons for unusual-looking identity areas. UKVIN should never label a sticker “fake” from appearance alone.

  • VINs at different locations do not agree
  • VIN is incomplete or cannot be read
  • Visible disturbance around an identification area
  • A label looks unexpectedly new compared with its surroundings
  • Seller discourages checking more than one identification point
REFERENCE EXAMPLE

Expected manufacturer identity evidence

Future examples will use licensed or permission-cleared photographs and explain the location and vehicle context.

CAUTION EXAMPLE

Example requiring investigation

We will use staged/annotated educational examples rather than accusing a real photographed vehicle of having a counterfeit label without verified evidence.
